She was a vassal to the late King Krichevskoy and holds a loyalty to the king that remains strong long after his passing. Two years after the death of the king, she manages to awaken Prince Laharl, son of Krichevskoy and sole heir to the throne of the Netherworld, who happened to have fallen into a deep sleep—or nap, as it is described in-game. Despite wanting the position of Overlord—the title given to the most powerful demon and surpreme ruler of the Netherworld—for herself, she decides to help Laharl out of loyalty to his father; however, she does so in the most reluctant and disrespectful methods possible, as she easily argues with and criticizes her supposed master. She also refers to Laharl as simply 'Prince', a nickname that carries on even after Laharl's official placement as Overlord. Etna explains to Laharl the events that occurred during his two-year nap: After the death of his father, the vast majority of Krichevskoy's vassals (Nearly everyone but Etna herself) lost all loyalty to the royal family (Although, most forgot Laharl existed entirely) and many of them fight to claim the title of Overlord for themselves. Laharl decides to reclaim his rightful place as Overlord by challenging all the rebellious demons to battle. Despite being reluctant to strain herself for the prince, Etna decides to go along with the plan. The few other vassals left with loyalty to Krichevskoy are too lazy and don't bother helping. Despite this, between Laharl, Etna, and Etna's 'Prinny Squad' (Prinnies being a race of penguin-like demons that are the reincarnations of sinful souls attempting to redeem themselves; they also explode when thrown.), they defeat the challengers with ease. The Prinnies are with Etna all the time and, hereafter, it can be assumed that whenever Etna is mentioned, the Prinnies WILL be there. They meet one challenger who goes by the name of 'Dark Adonis Vyers' who is given the nickname 'Mid-Boss' by Laharl out of contempt and disrespect. He reappears throughout the story to unsuccessfully challenge Laharl. Repeatedly. More importantly, Etna and Laharl meet the angel Flonne, who was sent to the Netherworld by the Seraph Lamington to assassinate the Overlord; upon hearing that the Overlord was, in fact, already dead, she--instead of returning to Celestia, home of the angels, or assassinating the prince--pledges herself as Laharl's replacement father to help him through his time of grieving. She doesn't realize that he isn't grieving at all. Nonetheless, she attempts to play the role of father to Laharl. After disappearing for a bit and not explaining why, Etna brings to Laharl a letter containing a challenge for the throne from Maderas, an ex-vassal exiled by Krichevskoy. This part of the game contains a rare event, as Etna appears guilty for giving Laharl the letter; this is due to Etna being blackmailed by Maderas into betraying the prince and acting as an informant. Maderas was holding Etna's memories as ransom. It's also revealed around this time that Etna, by Maderas's command, had been the one to originally put Laharl into his two-year nap via a drug. Once the group meets with Maderas, he reveals Etna's deception and his sway over her. Despite the blackmail, Etna eventually rebels and helps Laharl defeat Maderas and, as a symbol of forgiveness, the prince allows her to defeat Maderas herself. She spares his life (although still beats the living snot out of him) in exchange for her memories; she remembers her promise to Krichevskoy to watch over his son and help him become a great Overlord. After Laharl organizes a tournament to finally put to rest the remaining rebelling demons and wins, finally gaining the title of Overlord, Flonne is kidnapped by the angel Vulcanus. Both Laharl and Etna invade Celestia in an attempt to get her back. They defeat Vulcanus, learn the reasoning behind several plotholes that don't involve Etna, and then go home. Eventually, after the events of the first game, Etna abandons Laharl--after an agrument over pudding--and becomes a Demon Lord, which is a high ranking of powerful demons below only Overlord. She searches for the fabled Overlord Zenon to defeat him and take over his Netherworld. She runs into the characters Adell and Rozalin and eventually loses her powers and is sent back to level one. It is immediately before the events of the second game that Etna appears in Memento Eden, so she is not in her weakened state (meaning level one). The 'Prinny Squad' here is made of three Prinnies, each having been given names by Etna herself. The affectionate names given are One, Two, and Three. However, the names they possessed as humans are, respectively: Rasputin, Brutus, and Le Jacques. Being easy going and apathetic, they usually deal with people referring to them by Etna's labels. They possess no particular memories of their lives as humans, except for their names and the knowledge that they had sinned. Rasputin committed adultery, Brutus committed betrayal, and Le Jacques committed sloth, as he was completely and utterly lazy and accomplished nothing in his life. Each one was condemned to live in the Netherworld after death in the form of Prinnies as punishment for leading meaningless or sinful lives on Earth The punishment lasts until the day comes that the Prinnies have paid for their sins--fairly literally, as money earned in the Netherworld goes towards their reincarnation, along with working a lot and being helpful--and they can go on the journey of reincarnation via the Red Moon. Before becoming Etna's forever indentured servants, they were close to a unique Prinny that all others referred to as 'Big Sis Prinny'. She cared for and consoled many other Prinnies and helped many on their way to redemption and reincarnation. They eventually formed a unique bond between the three of them, exclusive to that of other Prinnies. With the guidance of Big Sis Prinny, they dedicated themselves to redemption and reincarnation, which began with a pledge to Etna as her vassals. They are surrogate brothers of sorts and are with each other, always. Despite the crap Etna puts them through, they stay loyal to her due to what they had learned from Big Sis Prinny and a sort of affection for her, since Etna takes care of them (not really, but they don't know that) when she's not abusing them. They traveled with her throughout the Netherworld, helping Laharl and eventually saving Flonne, both of which the Squad would eventually remember. One (Rasputin), Two (Brutus), and Three (Le Jacques) also quit as Laharl's servants at the same time as Etna--partly out of loyalty to her and partly due to being sympathetic to her when she pretended to cry--and travel with her to Veldime in search of Overlord Zenon. Of course, they end up in Memento Eden at the same time as Etna, so they haven't met Adell or Rozalin or been beaten to a pulp by the two. Also, upon entering Memento Eden, the Prinnies only remember their names given by Etna and will take longer to remember their human names. Personality: Etna: Egotistical, self-centered, and believes herself to be the epitome of beauty, as signified by her self-given title of Beauty Queen; this, by the way, she hacked in-game to override the default title of 'Demon Lord'. She occassionally breaks the forth wall, although this could be attributed by others as just eccentric, inane ramblings, which she also has. Examples of this include talking about 'levels' and other RPG- or general video game-type information that should not be known to the characters involved. She's manipulative, enjoys it, and will do anything that works, whether it is blackmail or using her looks in some fashion. She has little reservations concerning stating her opinion or criticizing others, although she will hold back—although not much—involving those she acknowledges as stronger than her; though she mentally acknowledges those stronger than her—she loves herself but she’s not blinded by it—she never openly admits to being weaker than another, unless she is forced to face them in a fight. In which case, she’ll run for her life. She's definitely closer to genuinely being the callous, cold demon Laharl pretends to be, although she still cares for people that manage to grow close to her, such as Laharl (when they're not at each others' throats) and Flonne. She, above all, despises people referring to her as 'flat chested' or anything suggesting similar and will be enraged immediately. She makes a habit of toying with the metal loop on her collar. Prinnies: Their personalities differ little between one another; rather, their personality is shared as a group, nearly to the point of a hive-mind, minus the ability to immediately know what each is thinking. In that sense, the Prinny Squad are, themselves, a single character. Prinnies are incredibly laidback and nonchalant. Despite being quite lazy, they are inherently helpful, whether it be offering items or advice; typically, they fall short at actually being helpful. They're very cowardly. They're easily motivated into doing things either via money (bribes) or threats (Etna), even doing things they are terrified of. They quickly become fond of anyone who treats them kindly and gently. As time goes on, the Prinnies will also likely regain some semblance of their human personalities. They explode when thrown and, although they themselves are unharmed in doing so, they really, really, really dislike it. Despite this, they do nothing when harmed or thrown by someone else and do not seem to possess the emotion of anger or anything similar. They also carry a large amount of random items (junk) in the little bags they carry around their belly, including tools, knives, sandwiches, skulls, et cetera, and lit bombs. Their catch phrase is ‘dood!’ NOTE: In journal entries that involve both Etna and the Prinnies, the Prinnies’ speech will be italicized simply to differentiate between the two. Journal entries with just the Prinnies will be typed normally and with an icon to show that they are the ones speaking. Naturally, anything not in first-person will not require the differentiation. Item Lost: Etna: The memory of Krichevskoy telling her to watch over Laharl and make sure he grows up to be a great Overlord Prinnies: Their memories of time spent with Big Sis Prinny.
